Keep those Crisp Packets Coming!

Last December, we started collecting crisp packets for recycling… hoping that the box we put up in SuperValu would be full now and again… and we were blown away with the amount of packets that came together!
Above, you can see Cristina with no less than 8 kg of crisp packets, all sorted and ready to be sent to TerraCycle! Cristina is the Sustainable Skerries committee member who had the idea for the crip packet collection scheme and is the lead on it.

Cristina is also the person who had to sort out all the things that can not be recycled. And she asked us to remind you:
Please only put empty crisp packets into those boxes!
- No popcorn bags
- No bars wrappers
- No biscuit wrappers
- No sweet packets
- No chocolate packets
- No rice cake packets
- No tea bag packets
- No breadsticks bags
- No nut bags
- No Multipack bags (only the crisp packets inside)
Some examples of what we can not take
Yes, Cristina had to take all those out of the collection box and to dispose of them in her own bin. 😥
Great news: EuroSpar Kelly’s Bay will have a box soon, too!
We are expanding our collection points to Kelly’s Bay soon. Keep your eyes open for a box there!
Our cooperation with TerraCycle, we hope, will help our town be a bit more sustainable by collecting and recycling those crisp packets..
TerraCycle’s stated mission is Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the “non-recyclable.” Whether it’s coffee capsules from your home, pens from a school, or plastic gloves from a manufacturing facility, TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste. With the help of the public, they are able to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfills and incinerators each month.
SuperValu
The Terracycle box in SuperValu is located at the back of the tills.
And remember: Accepted items are all sizes of crisp, tortilla chips, quinoa/hummus/lentil crisps and individual snack packets of any brand. Not accepted items are popcorn bags, snack bars, biscuit wrappers or any other non crisp packet like item. Items should be completely emptied before placing in the TerraCycle box.
