Skerries Climate Conversations: Green granny, green PTA, green emergency departments

Sustainable Skerries has launched a monthly event series focused on sustainability, starting with discussions led by local women at Skerries Library. Topics included reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices. Engaging community initiatives such as book and costume swaps and sustainable healthcare practices were highlighted. Future events are planned monthly.

2026 Skerries Open Orchards Update

In its fifth year, the Skerries Open Orchards Project has successfully planted 43 new fruit trees, bringing the total to 194 across 14 mini orchards. Community engagement included a brunch event and support from Fingal County Council. The project encourages local residents to care for the trees and enjoy the harvest.

Annual Meetings 2025 and 2026

The 2026 Annual Meeting of Sustainable Skerries is scheduled for February 4, 2026, featuring a review of the past year’s initiatives and a presentation by Brian Arnold on the Lusk Town Centre First process. The event will include discussions and refreshments. Past meetings emphasized sustainable energy and community involvement in climate initiatives.

Sustainable Skerries Supports the Draft Active Travel Plan with Some Suggestions

Sustainable Skerries has submitted feedback on the draft Active Travel Plan, emphasizing support for improved accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. They highlight the benefits of active travel and urge continued community engagement. Suggestions include enhancing pedestrian crossings, addressing traffic issues near schools, and advocating for a local bus service.

2025 Forest School in Ardgillan

Sustainable Skerries organized a week-long Forest School this August, supported by Fingal County Council. Twenty children explored nature through play, learning games, foraging, and crafting. The final day focused on local biodiversity initiatives. The experience emphasized the joy of outdoor learning and the importance of community involvement and sustainability.

Let’s Show We Care About Climate Action!

Everyone in Skerries is urged to join the National Climate March in Dublin on 15 November 2025, meeting at 11 am at Skerries Train Station. Participants will rally against fossil fuels and show public demand for climate action ahead of COP 30, emphasizing the importance of visible support for climate issues among politicians.

Water Updates 2025

In Skerries, a project funded by LAWPRO focuses on improving water quality and biodiversity. Environmental consultant Féidhlim Harty’s report suggests nature-based solutions for flooding and biodiversity enhancement. Initiatives include water refill stations and a Beach Toy Library to reduce plastic pollution. Recognition includes winning the Greenest Place competition.

Turning Autumn Leaves into Gold – the Sustainable Way

Fallen leaves after recent weather are beautiful, but they can pose hazards on paths and roads. Sustainable solutions include leaving leaves in gardens to enrich soil and collecting problematic leaves for composting. Fingal County Council offers community leaf mould cages to convert waste into valuable resources. Local participation is encouraged.

An afternoon in Skerries with The Irish Times

Skerries is in the running for the title of Ireland’s Greenest Place, showcasing community initiatives to promote sustainability. Local groups demonstrated various eco-friendly projects during a visit from judges of The Irish Times.

Calling for entries for the 2025 Skerries Eco Festival Photo Challenge!

Sustainable Skerries is inviting everybody in Skerries to enter the third Skerries Eco Fest Photo Challenge! Deadline 31 July 2025.
